The CAMEO Music Awards program was established in 2003 as part of our mission to create incentive and opportunity for truly talented Canadian emerging artists in music.
The awards are given annually to recognize and celebrate the talents, efforts and achievements of our finest artist members and also those of volunteers and others whose work is so valuable to us as we strive to achieve the goals of our organization.
While there are numerous other high profile award programs that exist to serve more established artists, the primary purpose of the CAMEO Music Awards is to create opportunities for talented artists at earlier stages of their careers who show potential to achieve significant success in music and are actively and successfully working to establish a greater profile in the music industry.
The hope and expectation of the CAMEO Board of Directors is that the outstanding quality of our annual award winners will soon come to be widely recognized. As we achieve success in that area, these awards will, more and more, represent a truly significant achievement and important career stepping stone for all award winners and nominees.
In 2005, from a field of over 500 applicants, superstar producer David Foster (noted for his judgment in regard to world class musical talent) selected Aimee Pettersen, a multiple CAMEO Music Award winner, to be one of only three finalists in his "Opportunity of a Lifetime" contest. Also in 2005, our Teen Vocalist of the Year nominee Amber Nicholson was "discovered" at a CAMEO teen event; her career is now being backed and managed by Don Adams, one of the principal organizers of Mountainfest. In 2006, Amber was honored by the BC Country Music Association as the winner of the Ray Mcauley Horizon Award for best new artist of the year. Also in 2006, Stephanie Lang, our Teen Vocalist of the Year 2005, was chosen as the winner of a Summer Soundtrack award by the Beat 94.5 FM; her music has been aired extensively on that radio station. We see these facts as confirmation of the validity and importance of the CAMEO Music Awards process.
To protect the integrity and credibility of the CAMEO Music Awards, we continue to develop and refine our voting procedures and nominee selection process, rigorously seeking to ensure that only highly qualified and truly talented artist members may win or be nominated for these awards.
In 2003, three awards were given: Female Vocalist of the Year, Teen Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. These award categories were chosen because they represented the areas in which CAMEO at that time had a strong base of talented member artists.
In 2004, two new award categories were established to reflect the growing strength of our talent base: Male Vocalist of the Year and Original Band of the Year.
In 2005, we introduced awards for Original Song of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.
In 2006, two new award categories have been added: Guitarist of the Year and Drummer of the Year. We expect that coming years will see the introduction of new awards for other instrumentalists.
The awards process shall continue to be expanded, developed and refined as our organization grows and as we are able to further develop and acquire the necessary support from sponsors, members and others.
